This blog post is a little introduction to the brand Bite Beauty.
The phrase "Bite Me" will take on a whole different meaning once you start thinking about Bite Beauty and using their products.
Bite Beauty is a Toronto based beauty brand that primarily focuses on lip products. Founder/Creator Suzanne Langmuir (about her) first started formulating them in 2009 and the initial collection debuted in 2011. I got to meet Ms Langmuir briefly at a recent press event for Bite Beauty and she has such a kind and knowledgeable manner about her that blew me away.
I think I first came across Bite Beauty in Australia, a few years ago at About Life, an upmarket organic supermarket. I think I was just starting my obsession with makeup at that time.
To be honest, I was never a huge fan of lipsticks. I preferred face products and eye products. On reflection, I believe that the reason why I didn't like lipsticks was because of the fear of knowing that I was constantly ingesting something that wasn't exactly meant to be eaten. Some of you might think I'm being silly but the idea still lingers on with me till today, though I am a little bit braver these days.
So I was super excited to come across the line of lip products by Bite Beauty.
YASSS, Bite Beauty products are edible. EDIBLE?! Yup, they are food grade. They are also made from certified organic ingredients.
What are they?
Bite Beauty is available exclusively to/in Sephora.
The Bite Beauty range is extensive and I mean EXTENSIVE. The range includes:
lip scrubs
lip masks
lip balms
lip primer
lipsticks
lip tints
lip pencils
lip glosses
lip crayons
liquid lipsticks or "liquefied lipsticks" as Bite Beauty calls them
Oh and there are also the "Multisticks" which you can use on the lips, face and eyes
they used to have lip oils (but I can't seem to find them on Sephora's website anymore)
All products are formulated with food grade and certified organic ingredients and anti-aging resveratrol.
Per WebMD, resveratrol is described as "part of a group of compounds called polyphenols. They're thought to act like antioxidants, protecting the body against damage that can put you at higher risk for things like cancer and heart disease. It's in the skin of red grapes, but you can also find it in peanuts and berries."
The packaging of the products themselves is minimalistic chic. They come in a matte grey outer casing that feels a bit like velvet and looks a bit like rubber. They feel nice to touch. The caps of the lipsticks have a dent in them that fits my thumb. I would suggest that they have a ergonomic design as the lipsticks fit so nicely in my hand.
The box packaging is quite luxe. For example, each lipstick comes in a box with a slip case.
It would be impossible for me to swatch my entire Bite Beauty collection for you. I do think that the swatches on the Bite Beauty website are quite accurate.
What I like about them (and why you should try them)
I suppose it is pretty obvious, but here are a few reasons why I like them and why you should try them:
SAFE. I've been told that when a pregnant lady turns up in a Sephora asking for lipsticks, they are directed immediately to the Bite Beauty section. Safe enough for pregnant women, MORE than good enough for me. They do not have the nasties, i.e. NO parabens, silicones, petrochemicals, phthalates and gluten).
HUGE RANGE. From lip scrubs to lip pencils and now the Multisticks, you won't get bored.
TASTY. They taste like a citrus flavoured mint. No sickly chemical or artificial taste for sure! They taste like that because the ingredients include citrus and mint essential oils.
LOVINGLY HAND CRAFTED. The Amuse Bouche range of lipsticks is made by hand. YUP. Hand crafted lipsticks. If they care enough to make it by hand, I reckon they care A LOT about their products and A LOT about their customers.
COOL INGREDIENTS. The products include ingredients like coconut oil; Monoi butter; and grapefruit, lemon, lime, tangelo, mint & mandarin extracts. The agave lip scrub has, you guessed it, agave in it along with pineapple enzymes and brown sugar.
CUTE and CLEVER NAMES. Who doesn't love cute names?! I think when a company takes the time to name each shade of lipstick, it shows that they care. I'm not talking about names like "nude beige" or "#216" but names like "Kimchi"; "Gingersnap" and "Pickled Ginger" (my faves are called "Rhubarb"; "Gin Fizz" and "Nori"). I think it is super clever that they used the term "Amuse Bouche" for their lip colour product range. "Amuse Bouche" in French literally translates as amuse mouth. It is also super clever because the term "Amuse Bouche" is commonly used in the Culinary World to refer to the little bite sized portions of food served before or in between courses at fancy restaurants. So you get that immediate reference to FOOD/EDIBLE.
GOOD TO KNOW. I like that Bite Beauty includes at-a-glance useful information on their packaging that indicates if the particular product is 100% natural; or 97% natural etc etc.
ANTI-AGING. As mentioned above, the products are formulated with red wine derived resveratrol.
MULTISTICKS. I like the idea of a product that I can have multiple uses for. I think that's value for money.
The only slightly frustrating thing about them is that, aside from the liquid lipsticks and lip glosses, it is a bit hard to tell what shade of lipstick you have in your collection because of the all matte grey packaging. Also (and I am not sure if they have fixed this), I've noticed that the grey matte packaging on some of my older lipsticks has become a dust magnet (see photo above of my matte lip crayons).
What to try
If you have not tried Bite Beauty before, my personal recommendations (and why) are:
The Agave Lip Mask
It comes in two versions which are the same to me except for the colour. The one in the photo on the right is the "champagne" version. It has a faint pink tint to it.
The Agave Lip Mask is very moisturising and tastes good too. I like to use it as an overnight treatment.
Amuse Bouche Lipsticks
There are currently 34 shades in the range. I'm sure you should be able to find one (or more) to your liking. They are so creamy, smooth and easy to apply. I like that they are handcrafted. Highly pigmented, most of them leave a nice stain (the nudes less so). The one I have swatched above is called "Rhubarb".
Amuse Bouche Liquefied Lipsticks
There are currently 18 shades in this range. To me, they are literally a liquified form of the Amuse Bouche Lipsticks, except that they have a more satin finish which Bite Beauty described as a "semi-glaze". They are just as pigmented as the Amuse Bouche Lipsticks.
The doe-foot applicator makes it very easy to apply, especially for people like me who have uneven lips. They have coconut oil and Monoi butter in them.
I would recommend that you apply a lip pencil first though, to help it last longer.
One of my favourites from the collection is the shade "Marsala" which is swatched in the photo above.
The Agave Lip Balm
Super moisturising. I love the little bullet shape of this. Smells like vanilla bean infused sugar. Tastes like it too! Not surprising because it is made from Vanilla CO2 extract and Agave Nectar.
The Multisticks
I have tried one and used it completely up. Sorry, I tossed the empty packaging out while I was doing a clean-up.
I think it was in the shade "Almond" a kind of pinkish brown that worked for my complexion on the eyes, lips and cheeks. I just love the idea of a product that can be used all-over. They are highly pigmented, so don't be surprised by the small tube. Might look small, but they do pack a punch.
