What is "Ugly Beauty"?

Ugly Beautiful is The Bodyshop's latest body and skincare range using fruits and vegs of naturally wonky size that get left behind. Most people/shops always avoid fruits and vegs that don't look "perfect" even though they are perfectly fit to be eaten. I like this initiative - "let no good thing go to waste!!

For this range The Body Shop continues to help people and the planet. The ingredients are sourced from community traded products sourced from certified organic land. For example, since 2015, the Body Shop has helped support indigenous female farmers in respect of a lot of the ingredients they use, for example aloe vera and shea butter.

These products are #veganskincare and made from 100% recyclable packaging.

You can purchase all of these products online or find your nearest stockist by going to The Bodyshop's Website (click here). They are all reasonably priced: A$11 -A$29.

The collection also includes Limited Edition products: Ginger and Banana Bath and Body Care.

Review of The BodyShop's Ugly Beautiful Face and Body Care Products

The Bodyshop Carrot Wash and Carrot Cream

Carrots are packed with lots of nutrients. I've never tried a carrot based skincare product before, so I was super excited about these products. Overall, I found them enjoyable to use and I felt that they were value for money (cleanser RRPA22; moisturiser RRPA27).

Carrot Wash Energizing Face Cleanser

The #bodyshopcarrotwash smells so yummy. You can a really fresh scent from it. It is made from organic carrots and Community Trade organic aloe vera from Mexico.

This is a nice daily cleanser and it works for my sensitive skin. It did not irritate the chemical burns on my face (used to hate them, but now I'm finding them super useful as a "barometer" for testing skincare).

This is #valueformoney product. A little goes a long way. I like how quickly it lathers up and rinses off quickly. It leaves my skin feeling softer and I think my skin did look brighter as I was using it continuously.

The Ingredients are:

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Aqua/Water/Eau, Coco-Glucoside, Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Decyl Glucoside, Carrageenan, Sodium Chloride, Levulinic Acid, Sodium Gluconate, Daucus Carota Sativa Root Extract/Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Citric Acid, Sodium Levulinate, Sodium Benzoate, Parfum/Fragrance, Potassium Sorbate, Menthol, Linalool, CI 77492/Iron Oxides, CI 77491/Iron Oxides.

Carrot Cream Nature Rich Daily Moisturiser

#thebodyshopcarrotcream pairs really well with the cleanser. It has the same fresh vegie scent. This is a light and hydrating antioxidant packed carrot based moisturiser. I liked how quickly it absorbed into my skin. It did keep my skin nice and moisturised and did not irritate my chemical burns - in fact, on days when I used #thebodyshopcarrotcream, my chemical burns were very much less obvious. It is 97% ingredients of natural origin.

Like the Cleanser, I also felt that this made my skin look brighter (carrots after all are packed with vitamin C).

The Ingredients are:

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Aqua/Water/Eau, Arachidyl Alcohol, Myristyl Myristate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, Hydroxyacetophenone, Phenoxyethanol, Arachidyl Glucoside, Carbomer, Sodium Gluconate, Daucus Carota Sativa Root Extract/Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Tocopherol, Parfum/Fragrance, Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Hydroxide, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil/Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Terminalia Ferdinandiana Fruit Extract, Linalool, Citronellol, Eugenol, Citric Acid, Limonene, Citral, CI 77891/Titanium Dioxide, CI 77492/Iron Oxides, CI 77491/Iron Oxides.

Nicaraguan Coffee Intense Awakening Mask

Just like our minds and bodies, our skin can suffer from burn out from City living/working. Our skin also suffers from too much screen time, lack of sleep and too many bad snacks.

This mask was formulated to combat all of the above. I really enjoyed this mask. The natural aroma smells like the best barista coffee I've ever had. This mask also exfoliates your skin with coffee bean particles.

The main hydrating ingredients are the community trade sesame seed oil from Nicaragua; community trade shea butter and cocoa butter from Ghana. It also has community trade organic cane sugar from Paraguay. Sugar is one of the oldest known humectant. So it does boost the nourishing properties of this magic mask.

I really enjoy this mask. I've used other "coffee bean" based masks before, and this one is in my Top 3.

I always feel that your skincare routine should be treated as an exercise in meditation and relaxation. TAKE the time to relax and enjoy the time you invest in maintaining your skin. Not only will your skin feel and look better, your mind will be feel rested and calmer.

I apply this mask for about up to 20 mins (it's recommended 5-10 mins but I just enjoy my skincare routine). This mask warms up a little. When I rinse it off, I can feel the coffee bean particles exfoliating my skin. My face always looks brighter and fresher after using this.

The Ingredients are:

Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Chloride, Isopropyl Palmitate, Euglena Gracilis Extract, Sucrose, Coffea Arabica Seed Powder/Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Seed Powder, Parfum/Fragrance, Sesamum Indicum Seed Oil/Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter/Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Butyrospermum Parkii Butter/Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Xanthan Gum, Aqua/Water/Eau, Caffeine, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Tocopherol, Biotin, Citric Acid, Caramel.

Review of The Body Shop's Vegan Sheet Masks

I also tried one each of the:

  • Vitamin E Quench Sheet Mask - enriched with Community Trade organic aloe vera, natural-origin hyaluronic acid and wheatgerm oil. Suitable for all skin types.

  • Seaweed Balance Sheet Mask - enriched with cucumber extract, mineral-rich seaweed from Ireland and Community Trade organic aloe vera from Mexico for oily/combination skin.

  • Aloe Calm Hydration Sheet Mask - enriched with cucumber extract and Community Trade organic aloe vera from Mexico. Formulated for sensitive skin.

These #sheetmasks are 100% vegan and made from The Body Shop's biodegradable #VEOCEL. Prior to trying these, I had only ever tried sheet masks from Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

VEOCEL is something new to me. So I did a bit of research and found this website:

https://www.veocel.com/. The "material" sounds very cool.

It is recommended that you apply them for 15 mins. I've had sheet masks that slide off my face if I'm sitting or standing, but this one does stay on, which is why I left them on for much longer. There is quite a generous amount of the serum in each bag, and I use that for my neck and hands and anywhere else I feel needs some TLC.

All of them were quite enjoyable. I have oily dehydrated skin, so I used the Seaweed Balance Sheet Mask as a pre-makeup prep. My makeup lasted longer and my T-zone didn't get oily for most of the day, while the rest of my face felt moisturised. I really like seaweed as a skincare ingredient (I'll talk about that another day).

If your skin is irritated, I would recommend putting the Aloe Calm Sheet Mask in the fridge before you apply it for that extra soothing feel.

Review of the Body Shop Happy Go Lash Mascara #crueltyfreemascara

On the various occasions that I have used this mascara, I found that it did lengthen my lashes and made them look more thicker. It did not quite hold the curl of my lashes (I used an ordinary lash curler). It rarely smudged or flaked. I also very much enjoyed the packaging and name "Happy Go Lash Mascara", as it made me smile and I got a pep in my step!

I used this mascara as a sort of condition/serum for my lashes. The main active ingredients are Community Sourced: organic Coconut Oil from Samoa; and beeswax from Cameroon.

97% of the ingredients used are of natural origin.

It has a very faint coconut scent. The texture is not too dry nor wet. Just right. I found the wand to be good as it helped separate my lashes for that "flared out" look. It also did give my tiny bottom lashes some length. It is not a waterproof mascara. I was able to remove it fairly easily with the Carrot Wash I discussed above.

Review of Special Edition Ginger and Banana Special Edition Bath and Body Care

All of the ginger and banana skin and body care come in limited edition packaging.

The Body Shop #totallytangledginger body butter and yogurt were a treat to use. I particularly enjoy #thebodyshopyogurt as I find that it absorbs faster into my skin. The Body Shop's body yogurt have a silky gel-like feel to them.

I sometimes use The Body Shop's Body Butter as a kind of "body mask" especially on my legs and feet which have very dry skin (flaky really). These have a light ginger and honey scent. It is enriched with ginger root extract from India and #communitytrade organic almond milk from Spain.

In #traditionalChinesemedicine, ginger is often used for its "warming" properties" i.e. the Yang (warming). It is all about the balance of theYin and Yang. So it is nice to have some body care that has a lot of ginger in it when I catch a cold or when the weather turns really cold.

The Body Shop's #wonderfullywonkybanana body butter and yogurt were equally pleasant to use. In traditional Chinese medicine, babana is the "Yin" and has cooling properties. So these, I found were cooling and soothing on warmer days or after I took a warm bath.

These banana products smelt like real bananas, not the "fake/synthetic" scent. They are called "wonky" because a banana is still a banana if they are in the 'wrong' shape or size. Such produce is often thrown out even though they are perfectly edible/useable.

It contains #communitytradedproduce & organic:

  • banana puree sustainably sourced from El Guabo in Ecuador

  • almond milk from Spain

The Body Shop Totally Tangled Ginger Body Care and Wonderfully Wonky Banana Body Care

Deliciously creamy! I also use both the Body Butter and the Body Yogurt when I shave my legs, sort of like a shaving cream. The shins on my legs have always been quite horribly dry and scaly, so it tends to bleed when I shave them. Doing it this way, I never have such an issue.

Equally delightful are the #gingerhandwash and #bananafoamingbodypolish.

I've never tried a foaming body scrub before so the Body Shop's Banana Foaming Body Polish was quite a treat! It smells like yummy banana bread and it DOES foam up. It is creamy in texture first before you add water. I like the double sensation of the foam and the physical exfoliant (olive seed powder). It is enriched with Community Trade organic banana puree from Ecuador.

The Ginger hand wash was quite pleasant and also lathered up quickly. It was able to gently remove dirt and even acrylic paint from my hands. It felt quite moisturising.

The ingredients of the #thebodyshopbananafoamingbodypolish are:

Aqua/Water/Eau, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Acrylates Copolymer, Olea Europaea Seed Powder/Olea Europaea (Olive) Seed Powder, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Benzoate, Parfum/Fragrance, Sodium Hydroxide, Musa Sapientum Fruit Extract/Musa Sapientum (Banana) Fruit Extract, Luffa Cylindrica Fruit, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Coco-Glucoside, Denatonium Benzoate, Benzoic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, CI 19140/Yellow 5.

The ingredients of the #thebodyshopgingerhandwash are:

Aqua/Water/Eau, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Parfum/Fragrance, Sodium Chloride, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Citric Acid, PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Sucrose, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Linalool, Citral, Eugenol, Benzophenone-3, Geraniol, Limonene, Zingiber Officinale Root Extract/Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract, Potassium Sorbate, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Hydroxide, Caramel.

Totally Tangled Ginger Body Scrub

Equally yummyliscious is #thebodyshopgingerbodyscrub. This scrub worked just as effectively as any of my holy grail body scrubs. The colour of it is very appealing and it looks almost like marmalade jam (#iampaddingtonbear). I go through this quite fast. I take about half a handful when I use it. I like to use it when I am in the bath as well as it then fragrances the bath water.

It is enriched with ginger root extract from India and Community Trade organic cane sugar from Paraguay. The physical exfoliants are walnut shell powder and hydrated silica.

The ingredients of #thebodyshopgingerbodyscrub are:

Aqua/Water/Eau, Glycerin, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Juglans Regia Shell Powder/Juglans Regia (Walnut) Shell Powder, Hydrated Silica, Polysorbate 20, Benzyl Alcohol, Parfum/Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Sodium Hydroxide, Sucrose, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Linalool, Citral, Benzophenone-3, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Eugenol, Geraniol, PEG-30 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Trideceth-6, Zingiber Officinale Root Extract/Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract, Limonene, Denatonium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Caramel, CI 19140/Yellow 5.

The Body Shop Ginger Shower Gel & Banana Shower Gel

I LOVE The Body Shop's shower gels. For me, these last a long time and are priced quite reasonably. A little goes a long way as it does lather up quite a bit. Just A$11 each! Both are #veganbodycare.

#thebodyshopgingershowergel is also enriched with ginger root extract from India and Community Trade organic cane sugar from Paraguay. It has this fresh zingy and caramel sweet scent. Perfect as a wake-me-up when I use it in the morning.

#thebodyshopbananashowercream also lathers instantly upon contact with water. It is enriched with enriched with Community Trade organic banana puree from Ecuador. It lives up to its name of being a "cream". My body does feel quite mositurised after using it.

Sometimes as a treat, I will use them for a "bubble bath". Extremely relaxing.

The ingredients of #thebodyshopgingershowergel are:

Aqua/Water/Eau, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Parfum/Fragrance, Sodium Chloride, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Citric Acid, PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Sucrose, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Linalool, Citral, Eugenol, Benzophenone-3, Geraniol, Limonene, Zingiber Officinale Root Extract/Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract, Potassium Sorbate, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Hydroxide, Caramel.
